2018 General School Election

2018 General School Election

If you are thinking about running for School Trustee in the upcoming 2018 General School Election, nomination packages will be available starting on Friday, July 27. Nomination packages can be picked up during regular business hours at School District No. 28 (Quesnel), 401 North Star Road or at Quesnel City Hall, 410 Kinchant Street.

The nomination period for candidates begins at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, September. 4, 2018 and closes at 4 p.m. on Friday, September 14, 2018.

A person is qualified to be nominated, elected, and to hold office as a School Trustee if they meet the following criteria:
  • Canadian citizen;
  • 18 years of age or older;
  • resident of British Columbia for at least 6 months immediately before the day nomination papers are filed; and
  • not disqualified under the School Act or any other enactment from being nominated for, being elected to or holding office as a trustee, or be otherwise disqualified by law.

School Trustees in the Quesnel School District are elected at large across the City of Quesnel, District of Wells and Cariboo Regional District electoral areas.

As per Section 41 of the School Act regarding non-resident property electors, in order to vote as a non-resident property elector for a trustee electoral area, a person must not be a resident elector of that or any other trustee electoral area of the school district.  (For example, a resident who lives in Area C of the Cariboo Regional District but owns property in the City of Quesnel can register in the City of Quesnel and vote for City Mayor and Councillors; however, he/she cannot vote for School Trustees at the City of Quesnel voting place and would have to attend a voting place within the Cariboo Regional District to cast their vote for school trustees) (a second example is a resident who lives in McLeese Lake which is within the trustee electoral area of  School District No. 27 (Cariboo Chilcotin) but owns property in the City of Quesnel, can register in the City of Quesnel and vote for City Mayor, Councillors and School Trustees).

General voting day for the General School Election is on Saturday, October 20, 2018.

Advance polling opportunities for eligible voters in the City of Quesnel will be on October 10 and October 13 with other advance and special voting opportunities offered.  Please see the City of Quesnel’s website for these dates.

Advance polling opportunities for eligible voters within the Quesnel School District rural areas contained within the Cariboo Regional District will be on October 10 and October 15, 2018.  Please see the CRD's website for any additional special advance voting opportunities offered.
