An Aboriginal Education English Skills Development Teacher's training  includes Elementary training with specialization in language development, reading and literacy, Special Education and coursework in Aboriginal Education.  ESL training/experience would be an asset.  The English Skills Development Teacher is responsible for assessment, monitoring and planning programs as per the Annual Instructional Plans (AIPs) designed to support eligible Aboriginal students K-12.  This position includes instructional time as confirmed by the Principal of Aboriginal Education.  Preference in hiring will be given to persons of Aboriginal ancestry.

An English Skills Development Teacher has:

• recent successful experience teaching language development for First Nation and Aboriginal students
• a sound knowledge and understanding of the components of a balanced literacy program
• knowledge of BC Performance Standards in reading and writing with a commitment to implementation
• a working knowledge of current assessment tools in reading, writing and language
• knowledge of current research based practices in language development and familiarity with research based reading strategies
• a thorough understanding of the writing process
• an ability to facilitate focus groups and present workshops
• an understanding of staff development models
• ability to provide leadership in the area of Aboriginal literacy through collaborative and facilitative initiative
• collegial collaboration and proven communicative abilities with Aboriginal parents and community is essential
• strong interpersonal skills demonstrating a collaborative, consultative and supportive style in working with administrators, teachers, support workers and others
• proven strong organizational and effective problem solving skills.

The Aboriginal Education English Skills Development Teacher, reporting to the Principal of Aboriginal Education, works closely with other district professional staff to support First Nation and Aboriginal students in reaching success in the area of literacy.  This is an itinerant position based at the Aboriginal Education Centre.
